On 10 October 1945, the Chinese soldiers in Rabaul held a ceremonial parade in their new camp and the men marched under two arches displaying victory banners celebrating the 33rd anniversary of the Republic of China. General Kenneth Eather, commander of the 11th Australian Division, inspected the guard of honour and received a welcome from Colonel Wu Yien, the senior Chinese officer.25 Afterwards, Captain Gaul set up a wireless that picked up a signal from Chongqing, Chinaâs wartime capital, and the men heard their first news from home in years.26 An Australian reporter also interviewed Colonel Wu:
